Doug's Excellent Daycare Experience

DOUG'S EXCELLENT DAYCARE EXPERIENCE

4/29/2011 - Doug needed someplace to hang out today while he's recovering since Foster Mom Edi had to go in to the office.  So he spent the day with Kathy and the Krew.

Here is a photo diary (Click any picture to see an enlarged version and caption!) of Doug's excellent day, hanging out, getting treats, and exploring the fenced yard with his new buddies.

Really, Doug? Seriously?

DOUG! AGAIN?

I've been thinking all day about what I was going to post here.  And after pondering over and over, I just can't come up with anything but "tell it like it is"!  So here we go...

Got_meds

Monday morning, April 25th dawned with Doug deciding it was time for everyone to get up and have breakfast at 6:15 a.m.   He barked at Edi to get out of bed and feed him.  Stella heard him bark and came running.  She, of course, loves breakfast, too!  They were both happy and excited and started running to the kitchen, playing and dancing just like  every morning.  As they were playing, Doug let out a yelp, but then went back after Stella.  Edi looked and saw his leg was at a very strange angle.

Doug Goes Home

Written by

Doug the sleepy boyAfter a very long couple of days, Doug was discharged from the hospital and sent home. And while most of us would be happy to go home, Doug actually "dug it" at the University of Minnesota, and seemed to want to hang around. He told us, "Lots of people, lots of dogs, food - it wasn't a bad gig overall..."

Go forward for Doug is repeated wormings, antibiotics for a low grade UTI, and some more blood work as things improve to keep an eye on a few things - kidney function is not perfect, and he's got some low grade knee issues, but not bad for older dog that has lived the kind of life Doug has. Nothing too big to worry about - just to keep an eye on.

We got to the University, paid his bill, and then waited for him to come out. I looked up and saw him on his way across the lobby, looking

UPDATE 4/12/11: 11:00 a.m. CST:  I got a call from Dr. Stiller, the resident on Doug's case at the U of M.  Let's all take a nice, deep breath - but so far, the news is optimistic!  I'm not saying we're out of the woods, but it's much better than I'd hoped.

  1. His PCV is up to 26% which is good.  Normal is 37 - 55%, but Doug was at 15% twelve hours ago.
  2. His CBC is showing a "very regenerative" response - which means he is producing red cells
  3. He seems more alert, but tired.  But then, who sleeps well in the hospital, right?
  4. The anemia seems to be consistant with a chronic blood loss (possibly an ulcer in his stomach or GI system)

Doug has GREAT NEWS!

Doug

Thank you to Katie R., one of Doug's most ardent Facebook fans for the lovely "get well card"! The love for Doug is overwhelming!

UPDATE 4/13/11: 12:00 noon CST:

Doug will be coming home today around 5:30 pm! The vet student that called said "He's so perky today - it's like a completely different dog. And he's soooo sweet! We'd be fine if he wanted to stay here!"

So we'll be off to pick him up from his stay "at the health spa" and I'm sure he'll be one happy dog to see his sister, Stella (who has been moping about since Monday!). I'll try to get pictures, but from the sound of it, Doug is loving it there - lots of attention, lots of activity, 3-hots-and-a-cot.... What's not to like?

UPDATE 4/12/11: 9:00 p.m. CST:

I got the call earlier today and apologize for the late update, but I

Doug and Rebel's Excellent Adventure

Written by

Doug & Rebel: Two guys. Hangin' out.

The two ex-puppy mill studs decided to hang out together for the day. They started out at Petco where they found many smells and sights that were too good to resist!

Doug and Rebel at Petco

Then off they went to Diane's to run around in her big back yard.

A fun time was had by all. Rebel ran around and tempted Doug to play all he could. And Doug was interested, but not quite ready to commit to a rip-roarin' good time! Next time we'll bring Party-Girl Lola over. No boy can resist her charms! But all in all in all, it was a good day. Doug got a fancy new harness and a flat fox from Auntie Kathy who can't resist his beautiful face. Mom-Edi got him some tasty new food. And Rebel and Doug both got a new friend! And not a single cough or wheeze out of Doug all day! I guess

Doug Update - April 2, 2011

April 2011 Doug Update:

DougDoug is an amazing dog. What more can I say? Edi and William have done an amazing job with him. He's so happy, so joyful, and so madly in love with both of them, as well as with his step sister, Stella. (Though Stella is so gorgeous, what red-blooded American boy wouldn't be in love with her?)

We had another grooming session at the end of March and I was beyond amazed at how well he is doing. No coughing or wheezing except when he got a little stressed over the whole bath and blow-dry, but other than that his breathing was uneventful. He feel great now that he has those nasty teeth all gone, and he loves his treats. The next thing is to get his knees checked (they felt a little funky to me) to be sure he isn't dealing with any patella issues, and then it's time

GREAT NEWS IN THE WORLD OF DOUG

Wednesday 2/02/2011 Doug Update:  Doug went in to the vet this morning for his second round of dental surgery.  According to Edi, "Doug was so happy to go to the vet this morning.  He just loves everything and everybody.  What a forgiving soul he is."  He settled in to get ready for all that great attention he gets from April and Molly and Ashley and the rest of the girls at Compassionate Care Animal Hospital, where he is somewhat of a Rock Star!

GREAT NEWS FOR DOUG - MONDAY UPDATE

GREAT NEWS IN THE WORLD OF DOUG

Monday 1/17/2011 Doug Update:  Doug is doing well.  He was neutered and had the sebacious cyst removed from his neck.  Throughout, Doug had excellent EKG readings and his oxygen level stayed at 97 - 98, which is perfect for a dog under anesthesia.  Then they did dental x-rays and cleaned his ears out.  The ears were actually pretty good, and they're squeaky clean now.  Still a bit of bacteria in there, but they've been deep medicated and that should clear up.  Dr. Judi will re-check a swab in 2 weeks to be sure.

Doug's dental x-rays were as bad as we'd thought they'd be.  Lots of broken off roots in that poor mouth and more than a few abscess around the pieces of roots.  They worked on one side of his mouth and were

UPDATE 12/29/10!

WE DIG DOUG!! THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS SUPPORTED THE EFFORTS TO SAVE DOUG!!!
Doug had his 10-day check up today after moving to Minnesota, getting cleaned up, checked over, on a new medical regimen... and the news is beyond what we'd hoped! This is the initial report from Dr. Judi:

"I am really impressed with how... much better he looks - unless he gets really excited - you can't hear his wheezing at all - his ears are almost normal and he's really attentive - he looks like a whole new dog. He has lost about 3 pounds - so I have her increasing the kibble again - I'd ideally like to see him gain 1 pound. We decreased the pred by 25% - will recheck in 2 weeks - but at the rate he is going we may be able to neuter him and also possibly treat his teeth - Amazing!"
